A Long Walk to Water tells two interwoven stories: one of Salva Dut, a Sudanese boy fleeing war in 1985, and the other of Nya, a Sudanese girl in 2008, who has to walk long distances daily to fetch water. Salva's story follows his arduous journey through war-torn Sudan, eventually leading him to a refugee camp and then to America. Nya's story focuses on her daily struggle to find clean water, which is crucial for survival and schooling.
Nya and Salva find themselves led by thirst and the need for freedom from a dry and war-torn Sudan. Help Nya gather water and retrieve medicine for her sick little sister, Akeer, and guide Salva across the crocodile-filled Nile to Freedom before time runs out.
